Starring at the felt in the Turkish territory of Northern Cyprus, Spanish poker professional Elias Gutierrez has won two high roller titles and over $800,000 in winnings. At an incredible week on the EPT, Gutierrez has won not one but two massive high roller titles, and catapulted himself from relative obscurity into the reckoning for being the most in-form player in Spain.

With 50 entries in this second $25,000-entry high roller event on the EPT Cyprus ticket, a prizepool of over $1,200,000 was at stake, with just seven players receiving payouts. With eight in the hunt by the time Roman Hrabec was all-in with eight-six on a board of J-T-4-6-7 but was slain by Teun Mulder, whose pocket sixes had turned a set to triumph.

That elimination burst the bubble, meaning all of the remaining seven players were in profit. Simone Andrian was the first to lose out, calling off his stack correctly with pocket queens but losing out to Mulder’s ace-ten when a flop of A-J-7 paired up the Dutchman’s top card and a three on the turn and king on the river ended the Italian’s event, sending him home with a score of $63,000.

Out in sixth was the Bulgarian player Ognyan Dimov, who moved all-in before the flop with ace-eight. The Bulgarian needed to hit when Mulder was once again the caller, this time with pocket fives. A flop of J-9-7 kept Dimov behind but added in gutshot outs, before a king on the turn and deuce on the river ended the Bulgarian’s event, further strengthening Mulder’s hopes of clinching the title.

The Norwegian player Kayhan Mokri busted in fifth place for $102,000 as Elias Gutierrez began his ascent to the summit. Shoving with king-ten, Mokri couldn’t hit against the ace-nine of the Spaniard, as a board of 9-8-4-5-A paired both of the eventual winner’s hole cards as Mokri was sent packing.

The popular young Austrian Samuel Mullur was in the lead during four-handed play but a lengthy session without a bust-out eventually ended with him shoving when short-stacked. All-in with ace-three, Mullur was dominated by Gutierrezm who held ace-jack and that easily survived the board of A-Q-7-8-K to send the Austrian home with $132,100.

Down to three players, there was an exit for the Gambian player Hassan Nashar. He shoved pre-flop with ace-queen, and was at-risk but ahead of Gutierrez’s ace-four. Any champion needs that little bit of luck to go with their immense skill, however, and the Spanish player got it as the board came 8-3-2-5-3 to mean that Nashar was dominating pre-flop but dead by the river for result that was worth $174,100.

As the heads-up battle began, the Spanish player Gutierrez began with a stack of 10.22 million, more than four times the 2.27 million in front of Mulder. A board of J-5-3-4-3 landed early in the battle and Gutierrezz shoved with jack-six. Mulder called quickly with the ‘bluffcatcher’ of five-deuce but since the Spanish player had top pair and no bluff, it was all over.

Teun Mulder claimed the runner-up score of $258,100 but it was the Spanish poker professional Elias Gutierrez who took home the ‘Spadie’ trophy for his second of the week, and with the top prize of $390,200. That victory saw him rise to $1.3 million in live tournament earnings, a whole lot more than the $500,000 or so he sat on before the week had begun.
